Barskoon gorge

Nestled in the heart of Kyrgyzstan, a captivating 40 km long valley links the south shore of Issyk Kul Lake to the high plateau of Arabel Suu and the sources of the Naryn Basin. This scenic route, 2160m. of positive drop, is well-maintained year-round by the nearby Kumtor gold mine, ensuring accessibility even in winter.

As you embark on this journey, you will first pass through the quaint village of Barskoon. Here, the ruins of an ancient caravanserai and fortress serve as silent witnesses to the Silk Road's historic past. Continuing along the road, you will encounter remnants of an old fortress or post and discover intriguing petroglyphs etched into stone, offering a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage.

One of the valley's highlights is the series of stunning waterfalls nestled within the lush forest. These cascading waters originate from Mount Sary Tor, part of the Teskey Alatoo range, and are among the most beautiful in Kyrgyzstan. As you ascend further, the road winds its way through dramatic cliffs, past glaciers, and alongside smaller waterfalls, creating a mesmerizing landscape.

At the summit, you will reach the high plateau of Arabel-Suu, perched at an altitude of 3770 meters and lying on permafrost. This plateau is surrounded by numerous lakes and dozen of small glaciers on the north face and expansive, flat glaciers on the south face of the mountains. The breathtaking vistas and pristine natural beauty make this valley an unmissable destination for any traveler.
